Research Grants.
The Society offers grants
of up to £1000 each to research students working on the history
of France or of its current or former possessions. The Society
will normally make around 12 awards annually, depending upon the
quality
and nature of the applications.
Eligible postgraduates will be registered at a UK or Irish University,
and must be undertaking research into an aspect of French history.
The research grants are open to both PhD students and Masters
students: those registered for taught MAs, provided they are
writing a dissertation
on French history; students working towards degrees in MA by
research in French history; and M.Phil/PhD students working
on French history
who are at any stage in their research. Students already in receipt
of other funding (e.g. AHRC grants) are eligible. Students are
eligible to hold a maximum of one of our research grants during
a Masters
programme, and a further such grant during their PhD programme
should they proceed to this level.
Applications should only be made using the standard application
form below. The applications should be filled in electronically
and sent
electronically to the Secretary of the Society at the email address
below. It is the applicant's responsibility to approach the referees
and to have them send their references - which should be
around 300 words in length - directly to the Secretary either
as an email
or as an electronic attachment. All references must arrive by the stated closing date, otherwise applications will be deemed ineligible. Download: Application Form for a Postgraduate Travel Grant found here. It is a condition of award that successful candidates present a report on their research and on the trip funded by the Society. A 400-word report should be sent to the Society’s News Editor, Dr Jack Rhoden at wilfred.rhoden@bishopg.ac.uk and copied to the Secretary of the Society, Dr. Andrew W M Smith a.smith@chi.ac.uk. The report must be submitted as a word document within three months of the research trip. It may be published in French History and in the News section of the website.
Candidates will be notified in early summer of the outcome
of their applications, which will be assessed by the Trustees
of the Society on the basis of the quality of the research and
the proposal.
In exceptional circumstances, grants for research trips which have taken place before the closing date may be considered, providing the trip has taken place only after the start of the current academic year.
Deadlines are listed on the Grants summary page: http://frenchhistorysociety.co.uk/grants.htm
